Club Announcement: New Technical Director Appointed

Bowen Island FC are delighted to announce that Oscar Mather has joined the Club as our new Technical Director.

This is a key role within the club that the Board has been looking to fill since early 2023. Niul Bird who has served as acting TD since then will now focus on his role as Club President and coaching at youth level, while continuing to support football operations alongside Anita, our General Manager and Oscar in his new role. Niul has done an incredible job bridging that gap, over the past three years, putting in untold volunteer hours which all of us at the club are immensely thankful for, without him, there would be no BIFC today.

The BIFC Technical Director is responsible for all sporting operations at the club. This includes recruitment and training of all volunteer coaches and managers; overseeing youth development and adult programming; and managing BIFC facilities, equipment and relationships with local leagues and clubs.

Oscar is a brilliant fit for the role. A lifelong soccer enthusiast, he moved to Bowen in 2023 and started playing in the BIFC Adult Coed League soon after arriving.

He has already supported our youth programs and in summer 2025 successfully led our Summer Camps.

He will operate within our core values and will continue to ensure that providing equal opportunities and making soccer available to everybody on Bowen Island as part of our 'Soccer For All' policy is a key priority.

This is a huge moment for the club, helping to ensure that we are set up for the future and not entirely reliant on volunteer hours, which while successful over the past couple of years isn't a sustainable model. That said volunteers are as important to how we work as ever, and if you're already volunteering, we thank you for your continued efforts and are sure you're going to love working with Oscar.

If you don't currently volunteer but have been thinking about getting involved, well now is the perfect chance, we can guarantee we'll be able to find a rewarding role for you regardless of your previous experience.

Here's a few words from Oscar about his journey with the sport and to Bowen Island and what he intends to bring to the role.

---------

Hello Bowen Island FC family! Here’s a little about me.

I was born in Sheffield, England, where I spent the first 7 years of my life. The early days were all about football. Trading cards on school breaks, watching Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough, and kicking a football any chance I had.

In 2008 my family moved to Vancouver. I started at West Van FC as a U9, playing with them all the way through till U18 Metro.

At 11 years old, I was lucky enough to spend a year in Hong Kong. Away tournaments in Bangkok and Guangzhou are some of my most treasured football memories.

Between the years of 2019 and 2023 I studied engineering at Queen’s University, moving back to Vancouver post-grad.

In 2024, my work as a kayak guide brought me to Bowen. To supplement my 11-aside Men’s football on the mainland, I soon became a regular at local pick-up games - which were my first introduction to this brilliant community.

The itch to be more involved was instant. I reached out to the team, and quickly started coaching.

This past summer I had the privilege of running a week of summer camps for the club.

Curating the sessions, and playing in the sun was a blast, but the highlight was certainly the people.

From the U8s to U13s I was witness to the great skills, passion, and personalities that give this club its heart.

When the opportunity to TD came to the table, it was a no brainer.

I’ve loved every minute of involvement so far, and am glad to say it’s only just starting.

You'll see Oscar around the club in the near future. We look forward to working with him and the experience and enthusiasm he will bring. Please take a moment to say hello to him and make him feel welcome in his new role.

The Bowen Island FC Board.
